At Scarlet Opus we aren’t particularly into gadgets but………We recently bought a Color Cue from PANTONE and it is fantastic!
Each season we create a set of Master trend boards using good old-fashioned cutting and sticking methods.This
might not seem very hi-tech but working in this way means we can make
additions and changes to the boards as a team and/or individually,
progress is constantly visible and access is constantly available.We
are a touchy-feely lot and we prefer to build trend boards using
collage techniques which also allows us to handle and appreciate
textile and wallpaper samples and all of the other bits and pieces that
go onto our boards.Of course no trend board
would be complete without a colour palette and we also apply our colour
chips by hand so we can switch them about and make shade adjustments
until the palette is perfect.At this point
everything gets secured into place and the Master trend boards are
photographed for inclusion in our trend reports and trend seminar
presentations.
But
before the Masters are photographed we undertake the laborious task of
carefully matching our colour chips to Pantone catalogue colours and
allocating colour names and Pantone references.ZzzzzzzzzzzzzzThe Color Cue gadget has changed all that and now with one click of a button we get a Pantone reference reading.No more flicking through Pantone catalogues to find colour matches, double-checking or cross-referencing.Hooray!
We
simply place the aperture over a colour chip, press a button and the
nearest Pantone colour match is displayed on the LCD screen.Obviously
we can use the Color Cue to colour reference anything as long as it is
reasonably flat e.g. fabric, wallpaper, ceramics etc… and because it
comes in a handy carrying case we can take it anywhere and randomly
Pantone reference anything and everything!I’m guessing that Shelley (our Lead Interior Designer) will want one of her own before long especially for overseas projects!
I’m
not on a commission so I don’t feel the need to write a full technical
review of the Color Cue 2.1 but it is worth saying that it features 7
PANTONE libraries including: the complete PANTONE Goe System (both
coated and uncoated), the PANTONE MATCHING SYSTEM (for coated, uncoated
and matte stock), the PANTONE FASHION + HOME SMART Color System and the
PANTONE PAINT + INTERIORS Color Libraries. You can set the Color Cue
to the reference system you use most often and then it allows you to
click through all of the other referencing systems simply by pressing a
button.It can record the last 30 colours
measured for referring to later and is a brilliant time saving and
convenient device for interior designers, product & textile
designers, retail buyers and anyone in the creative industries who
works with colour.It isn’t a cheap gadget but for us the time we will save makes it well worth the cost.
